Today we find the boys engaged in some street repairs when they observe Ned, the local professional card-player, waiting at the bus depot.
"Headed out of town for a little rest?" Tad observes coolly.
"I'm headed to the county seat to see the doc," replied Ned.
"Our local variety not good enough?"
"I always thought so," continued Ned, "but his sign discouraged me."
Looking across the street to the doctor's office, Buster reads slowly:

"That's it," said the gambler, "I 'gotta get better odds than that ..."
