The Ensign

Back Next

Not too long ago a certain newly minted Ensign was assigned to submarine duty, where he had dreamed of working since a young boy.

Upon arrival at his new post, the fellow immediately engaged in trying to impress the Master Chief with his expertise learned in Submarine School. The Chief listened patiently for a few minutes, then cut him off:

"Listen, 'sir,'" he began soothingly, it's real simple:

"Add the number of times we dive to the number of times we surface. Divide that number by two.

"If the result doesn't come out even, don't open the hatch ..."

-----------------A Final Thought ...

"There were gentlemen and there were seamen in the navy of Charles the Second. But the seamen were not gentlemen; and the gentlemen were not seamen."

- Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800–1859), English historian, Whig politician
