We Have Met the Enemy

Though it sounds contrived, this is a true story:

During a lull in a military procurement meeting, held during the last days of the cold war, an Air Force general was speaking quite frankly as to his views on the Navy. After several minutes an inexperienced observer felt obliged to make a comment:

"I thought the Soviet Union was the enemy, not the Navy."

The general replied, in his most practiced military tone:

"The Soviet Union is my adversary; the Navy is my enemy."
