Just prior to the Russian revolution, a young soldier deserted his regiment in the Czar's army. He was quickly captured and brought before the captain.

"You are a coward, a disgrace, and a traitor to the Motherland," snarled the captain. "Only a miserable deserter would run as you did."

"Sir," replied the soldier, "I never had any intention of deserting or betraying the Motherland. It was simply that I was compelled to run away because I hate the enemy so much I can no longer stand the sight of them ..."
