In the dark days of the cold war, a Russian man let in be known to his friends that he kept his life savings in cash, 100,000 rubles, safely stored under his bed.

One friend objected strenuously:

"It isn't safe there," said he. "You must put it in the bank."

"Comrade, what if the bank fails?" said the man.

"How can the bank fail, it is supported by the Soviet government."

"Oh?" said the man, "And what if the Soviet government fails?"

"How could our government fail? It is kept in place by the party."

"What if the party collapses?"

The reply came quickly: "Comrade, wouldn't that be worth 100,000 rubles?"
