Once in old Russia a merchant, notoriously remiss in paying his bills, was seen haggling with a supplier.
When the scene is complete his neighbor inquires,
"Why bother? You won't pay the fellow anyway, so why all the bargaining?"
With appropriate dignity the merchant responds,
"I like him, so I'm interested in helping him to keep down his losses down ..."
