Two Russian men, accused of burglarizing a dry goods store, stood before the Czar's police. As there was no direct evidence, the men were questioned at length:

"You say you did not break into the dry goods store?" demanded the officer.

"Who breaks into dry goods stores?" retorted the first man.

"Did you or did you not steal nine boxes of linens?"

"Who steals?"

"Well, what work do you do?"

"Who works?"

"Then how about you," said the exasperated officer, glaring at the other man. "What work do you do?"

"What's the matter," he snapped, "Is is now illegal that I should help my friend?"
