Nicholi and his friend Boris were seated in Nicholi's small room somewhere in Russia discussing the affairs of the day. Boris, a former local party official, is finishing a detailed lecture on the cultural bankruptcy of the west.
"American society is corrupt and debased," Boris went on, "Why, just days ago the men Gore and Bush struggled for power, yet neither is yet able to ascend, while thousands say they cannot understand the ballot."
"On the contrary," replied Nicholi, "This shows the resiliency of the American system, where voting is examined in minute detail."
"It is debased I tell you," said Boris. "Under the Soviet system none of this confusion was necessary. The people understood clearly how they were to vote and the results were known weeks in advance ..."
