The preacher had been awarded a chaplain's commission in the Army, and for his first tour of duty was assigned to minister to the spiritual needs of the veterans in a mental hospital. The men, suffering from shell-shock, or combat fatigue as it is termed today, listened politely as the parson delivered his first message, developing the theme that there is a divine reason for all that happens.
"Ask yourselves this question," he thundered as a prophet of old, "Why are we here?"
A lone voice quickly responded from the congregation,
