Divine Protection

Back Next

Many hundreds of years ago, during the middle ages, the old priest of a certain remote church was pondering some papers when the pious village tailor entered.

"Father," he began, "What prayer would be best to say every morning to help me lead a more worthwhile life? On my word of honor, I wish to obey the divine will."

"You must conclude your devotions in this way," replied the padre:

"Protect me from the conscience of parsons. Protect me from the prescriptions of doctors, the deviousness of lawyers, and from the man who attends two services every Sunday.

"Above all, protect me from the man who always says, 'On my word of honor ...'"

----------------A Final Thought ...

"Avoid as you would the plague, a clergyman who is also a man of business."

- Sophronius Eusebius Hieronymus (Saint Jerome), 347-420
