The church was a large and prosperous one, but the parson felt it lacked the involvement and commitment of the membership. After raising his concerns with some of his clerical friends, the suggestion was made that he organize committees and form them around various tasks. The plan was put in force and in short order several committees were active.
Much to his delight, the parson found his flock enthusiastic about the new arrangement. Several months later, however, an exceedingly elderly sister solemnly but emphatically upbraided him for such an ill-conceived program.
Knowing that the old soul was naturally resistant to change, the preacher responded,
"We must all move with the times. "Committees have been proven to be an invaluable management tool."
With her most dubious expression showing forth the lady asked if perhaps he would care to read the resolutions passed by the building committee over their last four meetings.
