Big Trip

At long last the end was near for Mr. Dean, one of the meanest, most miserly and uncharitable old boys in the community. Feeling greatly unprepared to meet his Maker, the old sinner decided to try and wipe the slate clean. He determined to make amends for his evil ways and accordingly donated most of his considerable fortune to a local church. After the deed was done he arranged a meeting with the preacher to discuss the possibility of getting into heaven.

The preacher listened attentively to the man's story, but reluctantly concluded that his theological understanding did not permit him to promise such a dedicated reprobate heaven. He was reluctant to disappoint the old boy, however, and finally decided to describe his chances in the hereafter as follows:

"Mr. Dean, when it comes to a seat on the heavenly airline, just think of yourself as a standby passenger."
