During the middle ages, it happened that a certain Cardinal of Spain battled the enemies of the Pope. While most people recognize that piety and loyalty are critical attributes of a cardinal, few also recognize the need for a quick mind and a quicker tongue. On this occasion, the Cardinal’s mental agility was put to the test.
The armies were facing a formidable foe, and the time had come for hand-to-hand combat.
“You need not fear death,” the Cardinal exhorted his troops, “for I can promise you that he who dies in defense of the faith will be rewarded with remission of all sins. Now, I must retire to direct our grand strategy; and, to you who die on the battlefield, tonight you will feast at the banquet table with the angels.”
“Excellency,” shouted a corporal of the ranks, “why do you not stay with us so that you too may enjoy such a supper?”
“For two reasons,” roared the Cardinal. “First, I never eat in the evening; second, I am not that hungry …”
