Three elderly men, each of a different religious persuasion and varying political views, were engaged in an informal debate that addressed the great topics of the day. At last the discussion turned to when life begins, and the fellows began to state their opinions.

The after positions had been advanced as to when precisely life began from two of the group, the third turned to them and began,

"You guys just aren't thinking. Here's an answer with which I'm sure you'll both agree:

"Life begins when the children have graduated from college and moved out of the house ..."

"I always thought the Yankees had something to do with it."

- George Edward Pickett 1825-1875, American Confederate general noted for leading the disastrous Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (1863), which is known as the "high water mark of the Confederacy." The general made the remark in response to the numerous empty-headed theories (revived in our day) then in circulation as to how the Confederacy had lost the war at Gettysburg.
