Nate, a much studied gandy dancer on the Rock Island Line, was a man of few words and never known to complain about work assigned him on the line. One evening, however, Nate confronted the paymaster about his pay.
"My packet is $50 short," said he.
The paymaster eyed Nate carefully, then explained,
"I know, but last week I overpaid you $50. You never complained then."
"Well," said Nate, "I don't mind an occasional mistake. But when it gets to be a habit, I feel I have to call it to your attention ..."
