A number of years ago an Englishman who had been visiting a Kentucky Colonel living in New York City, decided to go to Virginia to spend the winter. After he had been away for a couple of weeks, he wrote enthusiastically to his southern friend in New York:
"I say, old top, you never told me that the South was anything like I've found it, and so different to the North. Why, man, it's God's country!"
The Colonel, a voluntary exile from Kentucky, promptly wired the solemn message back:
"Son, you shouldn't be so surprised. Did you ever suppose that the Almighty was a Yankee?"
