The Marine drill instructor, sorely displeased by the ineptitude of his recruits, was severely berating them for their incompetence. After several minutes of commentary on this subject, delivered in classic DI manner, he broke off suddenly as he noticed one of the recruits had been talking in ranks.
"WHAT WAS THAT YOU SAID, RECRUIT?" the DI inquired, at maximum volume.
In a quivering voice, the recruit replied,
"I said, to myself, Drill Sergeant Sir, 'if that guy thinks I'm going to stand here and take this abuse,
... well, he's certainly an uncanny judge of character."
