Recently Ma and Pa had some old friends home for dinner. As is custom with company present, Pa preceded every request to Ma by endearing terms, calling her Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, Pumpkin, and so on.
Their friends, appropriately impressed since Ma & Pa have been married over 50 years, remarked while Ma was busy elsewhere:
"We think it's wonderful that after all the years you've been married, you still call Ma those pet names."
Pa's countenance was much fallen as he remarked,
"Well, to tell you the truth, I forgot Ma's name about 20 years ago ..."
