Golf Bet

Back Next

The signs of spring are everywhere, and perhaps foremost among these is that Pa has set about again to perfect his golf game--a periodic event for most of the last 20 years that has met with indifferent success. Long-time readers of these pages will recall that Pa can be quite literal in his interpretation of statements or events ... when it suits his purposes.

Several years ago Pa was out with his buddies and had to make a slick 45-foot, downhill putt. As he lined it up, he announced,

"I have a dollar bill that says I can make this putt. Does anyone want to bet?"

His three friends eagerly agreed to the wager. Pa missed the putt by ten feet, and his friends gathered around to collect their money. Pa pulled out a dollar bill on which he had printed,

"I can make this putt."

His pals are still trying to collect on the bet; Pa is too.

-----------------A Final Thought ...

"If you think itís hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball."

- Jack Lemmon (1925-2001), U.S. actor
