Oldest Profession

Back Next

A physician, an architect, and a lawyer were once conversing about which of the three labored in the oldest profession.

Said the physician, "Clearly, medicine is the oldest profession, for when Adam was formed, God realized it was not good for man to be alone. He therefore caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and while he slept, he withdrew a rib from one side, fashioned it into a woman, and when Adam awoke, presented her to him. Since that was obviously an operation, with anesthesia, and took place at the very beginning of human history, medicine is the oldest profession."

To which the architect replied, "Hold on, Adam was created on the sixth day, so the medical procedure you speak of could not possible have taken place earlier than that. On the first day, however, God created heaven and earth out of primeval chaos and that, I submit, was the greatest conceivable architectural achievement. Architecture is, therefore, the oldest profession.

To which the lawyer said, "Now, now, and who do you suppose created the primeval chaos?"

--------------- A Final Thought ...
