The divorce was underway and the husband and wife, determined not only to end the union but also to put each other in the worst possible light, had instructed their legal advisors accordingly.
During the court hearing, the wife was put on the witness stand and her husband's counsel began his work.
"Now," he began, "what precisely was your profession before you were married to my client?"
Without a moment's hesitation, the woman replied,
"I was a barkeep in a local public house."
"Do you consider that a suitable profession for a respectable lady?"
"Well," she continued, "to tell the truth, I was proud of my work compared to what my father did for a living."
The attorney smiled, now thoroughly convinced he had made his point.
"And what was your father's profession?"
"He was a lawyer," she snapped.
