When F.E. Smith opened a case before Mr. Justice Ridley, he rose to address the jury. The judge most injudiciously then observed:
"Well, Mr. Smith, I have read the pleadings and I do not think much of your case."
Smith quickly responded:
"Indeed, I am sorry to hear that, m'Lord, but your lordship will find that the more you hear of it, the more it will grow on you."
