Here we have two quips courtesy of playwright George Bernard Shaw.

An actress is said once to have sent a telegram to Shaw ...

"Am crazy to play Saint Joan."

To which Shaw immediately replied ...

"I quite agree."

Although Shaw was noted for his ability to hold his own, and many of his telegraphic exchanges have been featured in these pages, on at least one occasion he was matched line for line.

When corresponding with actress Cornelia Otis Skinner, who was enjoying great success in Shaw's "Candida" on Broadway in 1935, Shaw sent her a congratulatory message ...

"Excellent! Greatest!"

The reply ...

"A million thanks but undeserving such praise."

Shaw's response ...

"I meant the play."

And Miss Skinner ...

"So did I."

---------------A Final Thought ...

"Englishmen hate Liberty and Equality too much to understand them. But every Englishman loves a pedigree."
