Cecil Beaton was showing Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (1900-2002) a selection of photographs of herself from a recent sitting she had given him.

After the Queen Mother had chosen one, Beaton suggested that he could have the picture discreetly retouched to conceal a few wrinkles. The Queen Mother rejected the proposal:

"I would not want it to be thought that I had lived for all these years without having anything to show for it," said she.
