Lady Blessington was forced by scandal to leave London and make a new home in Paris. As she had entertained Napoleon III numerous times while he was exiled in London, she naturally expected to be recognized by the newly restored emperor in Paris. It soon became apparent that Napoleon did not want to renew an acquaintance with such a scandal-filled personality. In time, however, they met at a reception and the emperor had no option.
"Lady Blessington," said he in most formal tone, "Do you expect to stay long in Paris?"
