Doctor Samuel Johnson did not suffer fools gladly and had little fear of hurting feelings. He upbraided an acquaintance for the pointless and demeaning way in which he earned a living, so that the man was stung to retaliate:
"Well Doctor, I have to live."
To which the reply:
"I do not see the necessity for that."
