Edward Thurlow rose to be Lord Chancellor at the end of the 18th century, but at Cambridge was considered unpromising.
His tutor once rebuked him, saying:
"Sir, I never come to the window but I see you idling in the court."
Which immediately prompted Thurlow's reply:
"Sir, I never come into the court but I see you idling at the window ..."
