Benjamin Franklin (1706-90) U.S. statesman, diplomat, scientist, inventor, and printer, served a critical diplomatic mission to France during the American Revolution. During his time there, he once had occasion to play chess with the elderly Duchess of Bourbon.

Franklin had just put her king in check, and was about to win the game.

"We do not take kings so," commented the duchess with some indignation.

"We do in America," replied Franklin.
