Oliver Wendell Holmes was fond of telling of the time, during the Civil War, that he was assigned to escort President Abraham Lincoln on a tour of the lines.
Pointing to a certain hill, Holmes told the president that it was occupied by Confederate forces. Lincoln stood up to have a better look and was greeted by several rounds of gunfire.
Immediately Holmes exclaimed, "Get down, you fool!" The president quickly obeyed.
Later, when Lincoln was leaving, he thanked Holmes for the tour, adding:
"I'm glad to see you know how to talk to a civilian."
