Hetty Green (1834-1916) was worth millions and referred to during her lifetime as the "Witch of Wall street." Green has a devoted pet mongrel dog, that was her most steadfast companion. The dog, unfortunately, had a habit of biting her visitors. Most of the hound's victims, anxious not to offend the rich woman, disregarded the animal. On one occasion, however, an visitor had as much as she could take:
"Hetty," said she, "that dog just bit me again. You've got to get rid of him."
Hetty declined, remarking:
"He loves me, and he doesn't even know how rich I am ..."
