Oscar Hammerstein II (1895 - 1960), among the most successful lyricists of the 20th century, was frequently troubled by critics who felt he was finished or others who ignored his contributions to popular works. His wife, Dorothy, took it upon herself to remedy this situation.
Whenever someone referred to Jerome Kern's "Ol Man River," Dorothy would immediately correct,
"Oscar Hammerstein wrote 'Ol Man River.' Jerome Kern wrote,
'Ta-ta dumdum, ta ta-ta dumdum."
