Clara Barton (1821-1912) was founder and president of the U.S. Red Cross. Dedicated to both principle and expediency, she never bore grudges, whatever the provocation.

Once a friend reminded her of a wrong done many years previously.

"Don't you remember?" pressed the friend.

"No," replied Barton with the certainty that befitted her executive position. "I distinctly remember forgetting that."
