Henry Ward Beecher was a tireless campaigner for the Northern cause who traveled to England during the Civil War. While addressing a large crowd in Manchester, he was heckled.
"Why didn't you whip the Confederates in sixty days as you said you would?"
Beecher hesitated only briefly then gave his response:
"Because we found we had Americans to fight this time, not Englishmen," said he.
