Bad Luck

Back Next

While wandering through the streets of the large city, one fellow is lost in thought when he happens upon a friend he's not seen in many years, unfortunately looking exceedingly forlorn and depressed.

Said he, "It's certainly good to see you, but what's happened? You look as though your entire world has come to an end."

"I'm among the most unfortunate of men," replied the sad fellow. "Let me tell you. Three weeks ago, an uncle died and left me forty thousand dollars."

"That's not bad."

"Two weeks ago," he continued, "a cousin I never knew also died and left me eighty-five thousand free and clear."

"I'd like that."

"Last week my grandfather passed away," the other went on. "I inherited almost a quarter of a million."

"The how come you look so glum?"

"My luck's turned ... this week, nothing!"

---------------A Final Thought ...

"Of course, money will do after its kind, and will steadily work to unspiritualize and unchurch the people to whom it was bequeathed."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-82), U.S. poet, philosopher
